چکیده

With reference to our recent paper addressing the global biogeography of human infectious diseases (1), Chen and Schmera (2) suggest that our method for evaluating beta diversity and its components is controversial. We used the method developed by Baselga (3) (hereafter, BAS framework) for partitioning compositional dissimilarity into replacement (turnover) and nestedness-resultant components. Chen and Schmera advance an alternative approach developed by Podani and Schmera (4) (hereafter, POD framework), which partitions beta diversity into replacement and richness-difference components. Chen and Schmera suggest that the BAS framework is inappropriate because (i) BAS nestedness (βnes) is not related to other nestedness measures, (ii) BAS replacement (βsim) overrepresents true replacement due to scaling differences, and (iii) interpretability of BAS components of beta diversity (βsor) is problematic. Although Chen and Schmera raise some interesting concerns, we reject their suggestion of a comparative analysis using the POD framework for the following reasons:

Additive partitioning of a beta diversity index is controversial.

A recent study (1) reports the spatial clustering patterns of the global distribution of human infectious diseases. However, there are some controversial issues that arise from the beta diversity partitioning method used in the paper. To further debate these issues, we follow the same notations in the paper (1) by writing the Sorensen beta diversity index as βsor = ðb+ cÞ=ð2a+ b+ cÞ. Here, a is...

Revealing Beta-Diversity Patterns of Breeding Bird and Lizard Communities on Inundated Land-Bridge Islands by Separating the Turnover and Nestedness Components

Beta diversity describes changes in species composition among sites in a region and has particular relevance for explaining ecological patterns in fragmented habitats. However, it is difficult to reveal the mechanisms if broad sense beta-diversity indices (i.e. yielding identical values under nestedness and species replacement) are used. Partitioning beta diversity into turnover (caused by spec...

Historical Legacies in World Amphibian Diversity Revealed by the Turnover and Nestedness Components of Beta Diversity

Historic processes are expected to influence present diversity patterns in combination with contemporary environmental factors. We hypothesise that the joint use of beta diversity partitioning methods and a threshold-based approach may help reveal the effect of large-scale historic processes on present biodiversity. We partitioned intra-regional beta diversity into its turnover (differences in ...

Evaluating multiple spatial scales to understand the distribution of anuran beta diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

We partitioned the total beta diversity in the species composition of anuran tadpoles to evaluate if species replacement and nestedness components are congruent at different spatial resolutions in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We alternated the sampling grain and extent of the study area (among ponds at a site, among ponds within regions, among sites within regions, and among sites within regi...

Temporal Beta Diversity of Bird Assemblages in Agricultural Landscapes: Land Cover Change vs. Stochastic Processes

Temporal variation in the composition of species assemblages could be the result of deterministic processes driven by environmental change and/or stochastic processes of colonization and local extinction. Here, we analyzed the relative roles of deterministic and stochastic processes on bird assemblages in an agricultural landscape of southwestern France. We first assessed the impact of land cov...
